ARBITRARY ALBATROSS was quite a shock when it landed on our desk. This is a melody driven car crash that touches on subjects we all have to deal with so don't expect an easy listen. Charity is something jobless assholes use to prick our conscience in order to look after people who can't be fucked to do it themselves. There you go, I said it but AA manages to say it with style and grace in track two of this epic crossover. And that's the point behind this record, easy listening music doesn't have to be easy to listen to. Imagine Rage Against the Machine rapped by grannies in turbo charged wheelchairs and you get the concept behind what the creators are getting at here.
The Vocalist Hilary Cunton has the voice of an angel and this is backed up by our man on the keys. The two of them seem to twist and turn in and out of each others sections like a pair of dogs making out, at no point does this feel like two solo artists doing their own thing. The vocal track comes across quite stern and menacing with a similar accompaniment on the keyboards but they somehow manage do it without predictably relying on the minor keys. Some have said there's subtle influences from the new romantic period but you'll have to make your own judgements on that.
They seem to find beauty in random things. 'Proud mother of a porn star' is a lullaby
but explores the family relationships of a man in the porn industry at such an
innocent level. Approaching subjects like that with such a different perspective
makes this more interesting.
The last track, 'You hit my mother in a speeding
car' is the perfect lifter at the end of a body of work like this. Sadly the
running time is only 20 minutes but it's enough to leave you drooling for more.
